According to police, Bernie believed Lisa was involved in a secret relationship with Dale Robinson, Lisa's brother-in-law and Bernie made threats against Lisa. Members of Lisa's family have stated that they witnessed Bernie Woody running from his parent's house, where he resided, with a blunt object in his hand and getting into the passenger side of a small car shortly after Lisa went missing. Danny Heath was Bernie Woody's good friend and also had attended George C. Marshall High School in Falls Church, Virginia. Danny was seen with Lisa on August 13, 1984, the day after Lisa was last seen by her family. On the night of Saturday August 18, 1984, Danny found Lisa's flip flops which he claimed he discovered while putting up missing person posters. On the same night, Danny's car was reported to have been parked on the road near the location where Lisa's body was later found.
Danny became a suspect and was given a polygraph. A police statement reported that "Danny appeared to be lying when he was asked questions about Lisa's death." The police executed two search warrants at the home of Danny's parents, where Danny resided. The police discovered a blood stained pillow, a blood stained mattress, a blood stained rug and a bag containing a substance suspected to be cocaine. According to reports, Danny Heath volunteered for a blood test to prove the blood stains were his and did not match Lisa. The police did not charge Danny Heath in connection to Lisa's murder at that time, the police had not yet discovered evidence that Lisa was murdered due to the advanced stage of decomposition of Lisa's body when it was found. The police considered its evidence against Danny circumstantial and did not pursue an indictment. After later discovering that Lisa had been stabbed 7 times in her chest, Danny's connection to Lisa's murder appeared stronger. Police reported that prior to Lisa's murder, Danny often wore a large pocketknife in a sheath on his belt. Police claim that Danny was never seen wearing the knife again following Lisa's murder.
On January 19, 2012, Danny Heath was arrested in Spotsylvania County, Virginia on charges of Possession of Marijuana (Case GC12001468-00) and Public Swearing/Intoxication (Case GC12001469-00) and arrested on March 2, 2012 on charges of Possession of a Controlled Substance (Case GC12004777-00).
